Congrats to Kelley Carpenter for snagging our Featured Athlete spot! Were so proud of you and how far youve come Kelley! When Kelley first started she couldnt do TGUs, pull-ups or squats - now there is really nothing she cant do including weighted pull-ups, chest to bar pull-ups, heavy squats and heavy TGUs!!! Shes a beast in here! She gives all the fellas a run for their money in the 5:30am class! Check out her pics and comments below :) She will also be featured on our website. ***Photo Credit: Karen Goforth owner of Irresistible Portraits*** How long have you been training at CrossFit Cabarrus? For about 3 years What motivated you to do CrossFit with us? I was no longer able to do the long distance type exercise that I was doing due to knee issues and I wanted something that would raise my heart rate quickly and give me a sense of accomplishment after the workout. Whats the biggest hurdle you’ve had to tackle? The biggest hurdle Ive accomplished is doing squats. It took me close to 2 years to squat to a decent level due to my injuries, but the coaches worked with me to build the muscles and flexibility to squat. It was a long process. There are still days when the squat does not work for me but thats OK because there is always tomorrow. What are some of the goals you’ve accomplished? My goals that I have reached are climbing the rope and getting down, pull-ups, toes to bar, and losing 40 pounds and body fat going from 32.2% to 20%. What’s your favorite movement? There is not one time that stands out for me as a favorite moment. This may be because at 5:30 in the morning things run together. However what is so wonderful about Crossfit Cabarrus is after every workout you feel good about myself because you feel as if you have done something a lot of people are not able to do. It is always fun at the end of the workout when the athletes walk around telling each other, good job and everyone is helping everyone put their equipment away without being asked. I always feel supported and encouraged! What’s your least favorite movement? There is not a least favorite moment because during every workout you do something that a coach compliments you on. The coaches know their athletes weaknesses and struggles, so therefore they know and comment when the athlete performs a move or exercise that is a major accomplishment for her even if the move is something very basic and extremely easy for others. The coaches do a great job of making every workout a positive thing. Any advice for people considering starting CrossFit? Dont be afraid to try Crossfit. Exercises can be modified to meet your needs. The coaches work with you. Females are not going to end up looking like muscle men if you dont want to. Speak up for yourself. If an exercise or move hurts, you tell the coach. It does not mean you are weak. It means you are smart. The coach does not know how your body feels unless you tell him/her.
