Congratulations are due today to SSGT Renee Cox. This week, ending a little while ago, she gave three briefings to the 392nd IS in Hawaii about suicide awareness. She and I worked together years ago when I was still in the service. She approached me as she was preparing her briefings to ask if she could use my recent status update about suicide in her briefing. I agreed, and she and I have spent more time talking in the past week than we probably did the entire rest of the time weve known each other. Some friends of mine contributed in various ways as well, and they deserve congratulations and thanks as well. But Renee had the courage to stand in front of crowds of people whom she, for the most part, doesnt know, and share her own experiences and views on this topic and she delivered a message. Her message, as I understand it, is simply to love each other. Care about each other, worry about each others problems. If we do that, we all come out ahead. Renee put more thought, effort, emotion into her preparation for this endeavor than I think Ive ever seen anyone put forth for just about anything. During our conversations, her level of passion and true, sincere concern for the people around her, and all of us, was so profound that it genuinely changed me. If we all just worked on caring about each other as much as she cares about absolutely everyone whos hurting, world peace would be achieved. Im sure of it. Congratulations Renee, you are an absolute champion and I am proud to have you as a friend.
