Congratulations to Margaret Thiel, Jan Heppner and James Thomas who represented Waikerie at the 2013 KESAB Awards. Waikerie was successful in the following awards Best Community Murray The redevelopment of the pioneer park was a noticeable project for Waikerie this year. The Rain Moth Gallery continues to showcase local artists, and has a wonderful new entrance sculpture. The Garden Club is going strong, and Council is currently working with the community on plans for a community garden. The schools continue with great sustainability initiatives and cooperative works and the Men’s Shed is thriving! Councils new kerbside waste and recycling is working well, and the lifestyle village is undergoing some exciting development. Community Action and Partnerships Category Waikerie There is just so much happening! The Waikerie Australia Day Spectacular attracts a large crowd every year and is a true celebration, then there is Rock n Roll Festival, Christmas Pageant and Santa’s Cave as well as the markets. One community project in particular which was highlighted was the project undertaken by the Waikerie District Community Committee which included the upgrade of Pioneer Park. Having been neglected during and following the drought, it was decided that it was due for refurbishment. The small group met and presented a concept idea to the main committee, then worked with a landscape designer. The result is a fantastic park that is sure to be used a lot by the residents of Waikerie.
