Congratulations to my friends in the Kansas City, Missouri Public - TopicsExpress

Congratulations to my friends in the Kansas City, Missouri Public Schools for finally being awarded what they earned last year: Provisional Accreditation. The schools are by no means fixed, whatever that might mean, and there is still a lot of work ahead. But when you consider that just five years ago, the board dramatically reformed itself to pull off the largest school closing plan in our nations history to deal with the legacy of the hugely controversial desegregation lawsuit, avoided bankruptcy and balanced its books, survived the sudden departure of a superintendent only to hire the districts first longterm solution at the position in several decades, and is now reopening schools and making academic progress....all, and this is the key, without subjecting itself to the education reform movements attempts to exploit poverty for profit. Look, theres a lot that still needs to be answered for, but when you consider that KCPS is historically one of the toughest districts in the country, this story needs to be told--especially the next time the pied pipers from the reform movement try to move to town.
