Congress News: HOUSE HONORS GILAS PILIPINAS Members of the House of Representatives led by Speaker Feliciano Belmonte, Jr. paid honor to businessman and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Manuel V. Pangilinan, and members and officials of the Gilas Pilipinas National Basketball Team, which won its first victory in 40 years with a triumph over Senegal in the 2014 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Cup of Basketball. In ceremonies held Thursday, September 18 at the Speaker’s Social Hall, lawmakers presented House Resolution No. 129 to businessman and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Manuel V. Pangilinan for his untiring support and inimitable dedication to Gilas Pilipinas and the country’s basketball in general, resulting in an impressive and commendable performance by the national team. House members meanwhile handed to Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes and the team players and officials a copy of House Resolution No. 130, commending them for their gallant efforts and competitive spirit during the 2014 FIBA World Cup held in Seville, Spain. “The gallant efforts of Gilas Pilipinas to bring the Philippines back to a place of glory arena of competitive basketball have brought a great sense of national pride and honor to every Filipino and deserve the renewed administration and respect of the whole Filipino nation and of every basketball fan,” the resolution stated. Furthermore, it said “The hard work, strong determination and competitive spirit of the players and coaches of Gilas Pilipinas, which won the admiration and praise not only of the Filipino basketball fans but also of the foreign media and sports analysts covering the 2014 FIBA World Cup of Basketball, finally paid off when the team won their final group assignment against Senegal.” (PRIB/rbb)
