Considering the interest of civil society and citizens, government has decided to unblock YouTube after Eid-ul-Fitar, sources have told Pakistan Tribune. An inter-ministerial meeting will be summoned in ongoing week to review the steps for removing the blasphemous content from largest video sharing website and unblocking it. Secretary Information Technology, Secretary Interior and the officials of Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) will attend the meeting. According to sources, the PTA officials have expressed the inability to take the required measures for reopening of video sharing website until the appointment of PTA chairman and its members. Considering PTA’s inability, the Minister of State for Information Technology Anusha Rehman had earlier this month constituted a 12-member committee that has so far blocked the URLs of over 2200 websites containing objectionable content. Speaking to media on Thursday, Rehman said that government aspires to reopen YouTube as soon as possible and the necessary measures are being taken in this regard. She said that all stakeholders will be taken into confidence before lifting the ban. YouTube had been blocked across Pakistan in September last year following orders by then Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf. The Prime Minister had imposed a ban after video sharing website refused to remove the anti-Islam movie titled Innocence of the Muslims, which sparked unrest in several Islamic countries.
