Utah’s unemployment rate of 7.4% in August 2010 is the highest the state has seen since December 1983. Over the past 30 years, Utah’s poverty percentage has stayed below the national average. Utah’s per capita income is 1.3% below the national average. 14,829 bankruptcy cases were filed in 2009 – the highest increase in ten years. Utah’s child poverty rate was 10.5% in 2008 and 12.2% in 2009. Utah had the 14th lowest poverty rate in the nation in 2009. More than 1 in 4 female-headed households in Utah lived in poverty in 2009. In 2004, the top 20% of earners commanded 58% of earned income in the US. From 2009 to 2009, Utah’s job growth decreased by 3.8%. Wasatch County suffered a 10.4% increase in job loss from 2009 to 2010.
