.. Continuation .. Janney designed Touch My Building on two scales: the architectural, using large forms to produce abstract patterns of colored light and shadow; and the pedestrian, attaching at ground level a series of forms that people could touch to trigger a mix of melodic and environmental sounds. When pedestrians interact with the thirty-foot fins, the neon lights up and sounds are heard from nearby speakers in the walls. “You get to light up your fin. This is an attempt to give the passing pedestrian a sense of touching the building, making physical contact with the architecture,” says Janney. One of Janney’s inspirations for this project was the architect I. M. Pei’s triangular extension to the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. There is a spot where people have touched the wall so many times that it has changed color, giving Janney the idea to design something that people could touch to change the building. For Janney, this helps to give the building a personality, a character, and gets people to develop a relationship with it. For next part, wait until 8 PM... :)
