Continuation . . .Sabbath School Lesson 12. How to Abide Q1:What key does Jesus give in this passage to abiding in His love? Joh15:9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. Joh 15:10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Fathers commandments, and abide in his love. John 15:9-10 (NIV) 9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain (abide) in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain (abide) in his love. 1. The key to abiding is obeying. 2. The key to remaining in a love relationship with Jesus is to obey Him. 3. We must keep His commandments to remain in His love. Q2: How do we express our love for Jesus? (John 14:15; 1 John 5:3) John 14:15 (King James Version) 15If ye love me, keep my commandments. 1 John 5:3 (New International Version, ©2011) 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 1. We keep His commandments as an expression of love to the One who has saved us. 2. And when love is our motivation, keeping the commandments is a joy rather than a chore. Q3: What kind of obedience is God looking for? 1. God is not looking for us to obey Him because we have to or because it will keep us out of trouble. 2. He is not looking for us to obey so we don’t get punished. 3. He is looking for us to obey because we love Him. 4. So the key to abiding in Christ is loving obedience. 5. No one is saved by keeping the commandments, but we keep the commandments to express our love for our Lord who has saved us. How to Love Q1: What key does Jesus give in this passage to loving Him? (John 15:15) John 15:15 (NIV) 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 1. What does Jesus call His disciples? (Friends) 2. Can you call Him your friend? 3. What makes the difference between a servant and a friend? (A servant does not know his master’s business.) 4. Friends know each other, and that’s the relationship Jesus wants to have with each of His disciples. Q2: What happens when we come to know Jesus? (John 17:3; 1 John 4:19) John 17:3 (NIV) 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 1. The “know” of this verse is not just knowing about Jesus it is knowing Him in a personal intimate way. It is having a loving relationship with Him. 2. When Adam “knew” his wife, she bore him a son. This is how intimate, close, special, and treasured a relationship God wants with each of us. 1 John 4:19 (KJV) 19We love him, because he first loved us. 3. When we come to know Jesus, we come to know the gospel. 4. And the gospel is that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the scriptures (1 Cor 15:1-4). 5. And why did He die for our sins? Because He loves us. For God so loved the world… 6. When we come to know God through Christ, we find someone who really loves us and wants to be with us for all eternity. 7. To know Him is to love Him. Q3: How did Peter describe growing in grace? (2 Peter 3:18) 2 Peter 3:18-19 (KJV) 18But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. 1. Peter ends his second epistle with these words. 2. We grow in grace as we grow in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 3. Should we ever stop growing in grace? 4. So growing in the knowledge of our Lord and Savoir is something we should always be doing until the day we die, and then for an eternity beyond. continuation part 2 . . . How To Know . . .
