Continuing my review of the Golden Decade of Music 1965-1974, where I am selecting the artists alphabetically and playing selections of their songs I liked or found influential from that Golden Decade. I am now moving into the D’s and will play a few from John Denver, the singer-songwriter, actor, activist and humanitarian. He was one of the most popular acoustic artists of the decade and AllMusic has described Denver as among the most beloved entertainers of his era. Throughout his life, Denver recorded and released approximately 300 songs, about 200 of which he composed, with total sales of over 33 million, earning him 12 gold and 4 platinum albums. The last song of his in the GDM that I am selecting is Sunshine on My Shoulders, a song written by American singer-songwriter John Denver, Dick Kniss, and Mike Taylor. It was originally released as an album track on 1971s Poems, Prayers & Promises and later, as a single in 1973, eventually reaching # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in early 1974. Denver described how he wrote Sunshine on My Shoulders: I wrote the song in Minnesota at the time I call late winter, early spring. It was a dreary day, gray and slushy. The snow was melting and it was too cold to go outside and have fun, but God, youre ready for spring. You want to get outdoors again and youre waiting for that sun to shine, and you remember how sometimes just the sun itself can make you feel good. https://youtube/watch?v=diwuu_r6GJE
