Continuing the World Lion Day news.. Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo celebrates the official opening of the ‘Pride of Pembrokeshire’. The pride led by male Hugo, mate Luna and their four cubs, Sola, Zahra, Alika, and Ebele, moved to West Wales from Longleat Safari Park in July. They are already a well-established pride and Folly Farm has no plans to breed for the foreseeable future until such a time a formal breeding programme for African Lions is established by EAZA. The pride arrived following completion of the £500,000 project to build a purpose-built, state-of-the-art enclosure. The house is made up of a keeper kitchen, 4 large indoor dens with viewing windows and 5 interlinked covered outdoor yards. The two acre enclosure is split into two areas that feature high mounds, mature trees and a number of high poles for enrichment opportunity. Attached to the lion house is an education facility designed to replicate a research station in Africa, helping to tell the story of the plight of the African lion. Visitors are immersed in the enclosure by the voices of rangers as they locate the Pride of Pembrokeshire aided by the zebra print safari Land Rover positioned inside the enclosure. Four large windows are positioned around the perimeter of the exhibit ensuring a magnificent viewing opportunity. Speakers also circle the enclosure enabling visitors to learn more about the lives of lions and big cat conservation through the keeper talks, given twice daily. The enclosure was opened on Thursday 7th August by Edwina Hart, Minister for Economy, Science and Transport, and John Lewis from charity Wildlife Vets International. The collection is working with the charity and the exhibit will raise awareness of, and fundraise for, their big cat projects in the wild.
