Continuing with my review of the Golden Decade of Music 1965-1974, where I am selecting the artists alphabetically and playing selections of their songs I liked or found influential from that Golden Decade. I am now moving into the D’s and will play a few from Donovan Philips Leitch, the Scottish singer, songwriter and guitarist who developed an eclectic and distinctive style that blended folk, jazz, pop, psychedelia, and calypso music. The next song of Donovan’s selected is Atlantis. It was released as a single in 1968 and became a worldwide success; becoming a #1 hit in Switzerland in 1969, #2 in Germany and South Africa, #4 in Austria. In the United States it reached #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The introduction is a quiet monologue regarding the idea that Atlantis was a highly advanced antediluvian civilization, and that Atlantean colonists were the basis of the mythological gods of ancient times. Aware of their fate, the Atlanteans sent out ships to carry their masters to safety, and these people were responsible for bringing civilization and culture to primitive humans. When the song begins in earnest, it conveys the message that the singers true love may be in Atlantis. https://youtube/watch?v=leI7sfmipuI
