Contrary to what some people believe, you can oppose much of current police culture without feeling gleeful when cops are murdered. And contrary to what others believe, you can oppose the murder of cops without giving blanket support to police practices that seem shameful. (And you can support a lawful and peaceful society without feeling gleeful when young black men are killed.) All of the deaths — on both sides of this conflict — are tragedies. Digging in to extreme and hardened positions is going to increase the violence and make it harder to find solutions. Unfortunately, most people would rather express hatred than find understanding of what people on the other side of an issue face — and society pays the price in increased conflict and hatred.
