Yesterday, from Juneau, we took a seaplane to Taku Lodge, where we had a wonderful grilled fresh salmon lunch. A black bear smelled the salmon grilling and approached. Cooper said he was close to her, before she was spotted. A young fellow, one of the nine, who lived there and ran the lodge, stepped forward with a big pole. He pounded the ground with the pole and yelled at her; she took a step back and did not advance any further. We took a step or two back until she was about 35 feet away. The young man said that they had named her Lois. During our lunch, she climbed up in a tree. Today, from Skagway, we are getting ready to take the White Pass train, which is called the gateway to the Klondike. This narrow gauge railroad was built in 1898, during the Klondike Gold Rush.
