Coronary heart disease and COPD share the same main risk factor, - TopicsExpress

Coronary heart disease and COPD share the same main risk factor, i.e. smoking. The strong epidemiological link between the two diseases is therefore unsurprising. The presence of symptoms of simple chronic bronchitis increases the risk of death due to a coronary event by 50%. In COPD for every 10% decrease in FEV1, all-cause mortality increases by 14%, cardiovascular mortality increases by 28% and the frequency of non-fatal coronary events increases by 20%. The link between COPD and coronary heart disease is independent of any other confounding coronary risk factors, namely smoking status, cholesterol, systemic hypertension and body mass index.
