Coronation Street and Hollyoaks have both picked up prizes at the RTS North West Awards 2014. Cast and crew from both soaps had reason to celebrate as the ceremony took place at Manchesters Hilton Hotel on Saturday night (November 15). Coronation Streets Alison King took home the Best Performance in a Continuing Drama gong for her portrayal of Carla Barlow, who has remained central on screen with big storylines this year. King fought off tough competition from her co-star David Neilson (Roy Cropper) and Hollyoaks cast members James Sutton and Stephanie Davis (John Paul McQueen and Sinead Roscoe). Coronation Street also secured the Best Continuing Drama Storyline for Hayley Croppers tragic cancer plot. The storyline category was largely dominated by Coronation Street nominees as Tina McIntyres untimely death and Anna Windasss ultimate sacrifice of sleeping with Pat Phelan were also in the mix, alongside John Paul McQueens rape ordeal in Hollyoaks. Hollyoaks prize recognised its digital team as the show grabbed the Award for Innovation in Multiplatform. This rewarded a recent soap first, when Hollyoaks used its popular HelloHollyoaks account on Snapchat to reveal Fraser Blacks killer to hardcore fans hours before transmission. The Channel 4 shows This is Abuse campaign for the Maxine and Patrick storyline had also been nominated in the Multiplatform category, alongside Coronation Streets online Who Kills Tina? tie-ins and the online campaign surrounding BBC Threes zombie series In The Flesh. The panel-voted awards ceremony takes place annually, rewarding excellence within the North West across a range of genres.
