Corsairs roll West Valley for second straight win College of the Redwoods amassed 532 yards of total offense on Saturday (389 passing and 143 rushing) en route to an easy 43-20 victory over West Valley in non-conference football action in Eureka. The Corsairs (2-1), who have nearly 1,000 yards of total offense in their past two games combined (974), got four passing touchdowns again from quarterback Will Hissong, who finished the day 23-of-42 passing for 389 yards, four TDs and two interceptions. Hissong has 698 passing yards in his past two games with eight TDs. “Will is distributing the ball well,” said CR head coach Chris Vicory. “The offensive line was able to protect him well enough, but he was helping us out also by getting the ball out of his hands.” For the second consecutive game, Hissong completed passes to nine different receivers, and for the second straight game, the bulk of his yards went to wide receiver Michael Malkowski. Malkowski caught five passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns on Saturday — including a 78-yarder in the third quarter — which gives him 15 catches for 364 yards in his past two games combined (24 yards per catch). “It’s great to see Will and Mike building that relationship,” Vicory said. “They’re becoming a lot more comfortable with one another.” The Corsairs built a 10-0 lead in the first half after an Austin Sauer field goal and a 25-yard touchdown pass from Hissong to Caleb Chavez-Lomboy, but West Valley answered back with an 80-yard drive to cut the score to 10-7. Malkowski caught his first touchdown of the day midway through the second quarter on a 25-yard pass to put CR up 17-7, which held through halftime. After the break, West Valley jumped on the scoreboard first after a four-play, 76-yard touchdown drive made the score 17-13, but the extra point was blocked (CR’s third blocked extra point in three games) and Redwoods used the momentum. The Corsairs rattled off three consecutive touchdowns in less than six minutes to end the third quarter, taking a commanding 37-13 lead. CR running back Tyler Taumua scored two rushing touchdowns on the day, carrying the ball 14 times for 66 yards and two TDs. “We didn’t really make any schematic adjustments in the second half, we just stopped turning the ball over,” Vicory said. Early in the third quarter, with CR up 17-13, the Vikings elected to go for it on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line, a decision which proved costly. CR’s Mike Atuaia stripped the ball carrier on the QB keeper and returned the fumble 34 yards the other way. Redwoods scored four unanswered touchdowns after that point. “I just can’t say enough about our defense,” Vicory said. “To have guys make plays like that was just huge.” The Corsairs play at Gavilan next Saturday before returning home Oct. 5 to play Cabrillo.
