Cory Allen Barney, 37, and Helen Renee Barney, 34, both of Pauline are each charged with one count of child neglect by the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office. A school resource officer at Pauline-Glenn Springs Elementary School was notified after a nurse assisting a 7-year-old child became concerned and told school administrators. Officers went to the child’s home where the conditions were described as “deplorable,†the smell “overpowering†and trash, plates of old food, dirty diapers and clothing were found throughout the home, according to an incident report. An officer reportedly could not walk into the room where the child and her sister slept because it was “so cluttered with trash,†and questioned how the children could fit in the small area. The officer also noted a crib mattress without sheets or bedding for the mattress. Because of the unsanitary conditions, the decision was made to remove the children from the home. Another reason for removing the children, as stated in the incident report, is that the school has had ongoing problems with the parents and concerns about the children’s welfare for at least a year, the report states. School officials made reports to the state Department of Social Services in September 2012 and November 2012. The children have special needs, would not communicate with officials and a “medical evaluation would be so traumatizing to them because (they) do not want to be touched by anyone,†according to a report. Cory Barney and Helen Barney were both arrested. ~DD~
