Could next weeks storm bring ice instead of snow? FOR WEATHER - TopicsExpress

Could next weeks storm bring ice instead of snow? FOR WEATHER GEEKS ONLY: I talked about this in last nights GEEK report and I want to spend more time on this idea this morning. Yes... there is now a real concern that the storm next Tuesday/Wednesday could bring freezing rain to parts of Ohio. Let me walk you through my thoughts: Heres what we know. This is going to be a major storm for a large part of the county. Ive been talking about the change in the weather pattern for two weeks now and the fact that the southern jet gets into the act. This is important because the southern jet pulls Gulf moisture into the Ohio Valley and thats when we get our bigger snowmakers. Yesterday I showed you several snowfall maps which were off the charts if you ask me. The snow lovers out there had to be excited and if you are one of them you are probably still excited today. Critics voiced their complaints that showing these projections was irresponsible and creating undue panic. However, in todays digital age where forecast models are easily found... do we ignore them? Is too much information leading to misinformation? Personally Id like to give you more credit than that and have no plans to change what I do with my GEEK reports. Now... back to next weeks storm. The track brings a strong low pressure system from Oklahoma and Texas up into Central Kentucky with copious amounts of moisture. This mornings models show the rain/snow line north of us...while also indicating a shallow layer of cold air at the surface. Im worried that the stronger the storm is... the more likely the chances for ice. According the the meteorologists at the National Weather Service, be on the look out for the possibility of a major winter storm across the area. It will be either a significant snow or freezing rain event.
