Councillor Mark Grimes, Ward 6, is still undecided about Jets at Billy Bishop Airport, so I wrote this little note to his office: Mark, I know there are a lot of competing agendas over the Billy Bishop Airport expansion, but I hope you will vote NO to allowing jets at Billy Bishop. To be absolutely clear: I dont oppose the jets at the airport, per se; rather I am very alarmed by the scope of the runway expansion, the reduction in navigable waters on our beautiful waterfront, and the lowered approach vector that will be required for the jets at this time. If there were no runway expansion required, Id be more ambivalent about jets. If there were jets that could be accommodated by the current runways and marine exclusion zones I think it would be worth investing in the improving the airports infrastructure in accessing the airport and the other costs that our city can Not currently afford. The $300 million dollars (a low estimate, I think) required to make these changes could go a long way to solve the current transit woes that arent actually related in Any Way to flights in and out of the island airport. I responded to the recent phone survey that I feel you have represented Ward 6 well in the recent past, and I hope to be able to support you in the coming election, BUT, If you fail to see that permitting jets at the island airport, and approving the outrageous expense of upgrading an airport that does not require fixing, is a bad decision for our city (and Humber Bay Shores, Long Branch, Mimico and New Toronto) I cant possibly support your continued representation of Ward 6 on council. Sincerely,
