Crain tries to mediate dispute between physicians’ accrediting groups Sen. Brian Crain said it was rare disagreeing sides would come to see eye-to-eye during an interim study. For a while Thursday, that appeared to the case as the Oklahoma State Medical Association said it would work with the American Board of Physician Specialists in its dispute with the Oklahoma Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision. But that was before a member of the American Board of Medical Specialists aired his objections. At issue is physician advertising, but not advertising in the traditional newspaper ad or billboard sense, Linda Gray Murphy, speaking on behalf of the American Board of Physician Specialists, explained. The type of advertising involved involves displaying that the doctor is certified by a particular group on their business cards, their lab coats and other materials. Crain’s Senate Health and Human Services Committee discussed the issue Thursday during its consideration of Interim Study S14-017, regarding physician advertisement of board certification in Oklahoma. Oklahoma Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision administrative rules do not permit physicians to display that they are certified by the American Board of Physician Specialists, Murphy explained.
