Creative License Plates Fund Arts Programs and Museums, Including Lancaster’s MOAH California drivers have an opportunity to purchase two artistic license plates that benefit museums and public arts education communities statewide, including Lancaster’s Museum of Art and History (MOAH). The first of these art-supportive plates will feature a cartoon character known and loved by many: Snoopy, Charlie Brown’s beagle dog. The special license plate will be a reproduction of an original Snoopy drawing by Charles Schulz. Snoopy license plates are just $50. Personalized plates are $98. Revenue generated from sales is intended to fund a future museum grants program. This new specialty plate will be put into production by the DMV once 7,500 applications have been received. Backed by numerous groups including the California Association of Museums, the project has already sold more than half of their goal in the past few months. License plate orders can be placed at snoopyplate. “The continued funding of arts throughout the state of California is an issue of paramount importance that residents should seriously consider,” said Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris. “By purchasing one of these plates, anyone can make a significant impact in helping to enrich our culture and expand the minds of young people through museums and arts programs.” The second of the plates, known as the ‘Arts Plate,’ is the primary source of Californias public arts funding and was created through special legislation in 1994. It is a joint project between the California Arts Council and the Department of Motor Vehicles and was the first specialty plate program in the U.S. designed solely to benefit the arts. The plate image, adorned with palm trees, is entitled Coastline and was created by renowned California artist Wayne Thiebaud in 1993. Since then, the iconic image has become famous worldwide, with sales and renewals of the plate providing millions of dollars to support arts programs in California. MOAH is encouraging California residents to consider joining the Million Plates Drive, an effort to generate $40 million annually for arts education programs in California and keep innovation and creativity alive for generations to come. Arts Plate orders can be made at artsplate.org. Lancaster’s Museum of Art & History (MOAH) is located at 665 W. Lancaster BLVD in Lancaster. Program and exhibit information in addition to opportunities to support MOAH’s programs through donations are available on MOAH’s website, lancastermoah.org.
