Crew tearing down the Parma Theater on December 8. That date is significant to many, as it is the anniversary of the assassination of John Lennon. Now it will also be the anniversary of the day that the effort to save this landmark and transform it into a useful purpose was ended, largely due to an indifferent population in Parma at all levels of citizenry and government, who decided collectively that the action of preserving and re-purposing this historic building was not worth the time and effort needed. I certainly hope that at least something will be learned from this needless tragedy and that we dont become more and more skilled at tearing down our history as time goes by. When you pass by here and see the empty lot remember that you are looking at a symbol of opportunity ignored, a possibility for an economic development engine virtually rejected, and a sad sign that this community is not prepared to capitalize on the wise trend of welcoming and cultivating the Arts in their neighborhoods, and reaping the cultural and economic benefits which result from such activities. If December 7, 1941 is a date which will live in infamy, then so too is December 8, 2014 in Parma, Ohio, the 7 th. largest city in Ohio with not one art gallery in the place. RIP Parma Theater, victim of myopic indifference.
