Crimea nationalizes Ukrainian state property Mon Mar 17, 2014 --------- Ukraine’s autonomous region of Crimea has nationalized all Ukrainian state property after declaring independence from the Eastern European country. Crimea’s Supreme Council (parliament) announced on Monday that all Ukrainian state property on the Black Sea peninsula, including major oil and gas companies, will belong to Crimea. In a resolution, the parliament said the assets of Chernomorneftegaz oil and gas company, Ukratransgaz Company, and the Feodosiya Enterprise are currently Crimea’s property, Russias ITAR-TASS news agency reported. “The aforesaid enterprises have been nationalized with an aim to ensure ecological and energy safety, create conditions for extracting, storing and transporting hydrocarbons across the Crimean territory; supply Crimean residents with energy resources and ensure uninterrupted work of life-support facilities,” the resolution stated. Crimea declared independence from Ukraine and formally applied to become part of the Russian territory following a referendum on Sunday, in which 96.8 percent of Crimeans voted in favor of the secession. The Crimean parliament passed the decree on Monday after all the 85 lawmakers present in the 100-seat assembly voted in support of seceding from Ukraine. Meanwhile, Crimeas lawmakers declared the Russian ruble as the peninsulas second official currency and vowed to disband the Ukrainian military units stationed across the peninsula. Authorities in the region say Moscow has sent Crimea over USD 400 million in financial assistance in response to the vote. Ukraine has been gripped by a political crisis since November 2013, after ousted president Yanukovych refrained from signing an Association Agreement with the European Union in favor of closer ties with Russia.
