Crimea referendum has put many countries into dilemma. For most of the CIS countries, not recognizing Crimea would mean defiance of Russia. Uzbekistan, Belorussia, Turkmenistan, Kirgizstan and Moldova will not take much time to recognize Crimea as dispensation in these countries is more of Pro - Russian than anything else. Dilemma must be for Kazakhstan. It is hanging in balance between EU and the Russian Federation. President Nazarbayev has intelligently preserved ties with Russia and simultaneously opened up for EU. Kazakh trade ties with Germany and other European nations are very strong. However its Economy is still vastly dependent on ties with Russia. Kazakhstan has leased out one of its major towns Baikanoor to Russia for 90 years. Russian forces are stationed deep inside Kazakhstan. What will Kazakhstan do if given a choice. Offending Russia would mean instability both political as well as economical. Offending EU would also mean instability both political as well as Economical. Moreover in case of siding with Putin, West might fuel pro - democracy unrests to topple the despotic regime in Kazakhstan. Deep dilemma must be felt deeply in Alma Ati.
