Culinary fact The tomato fruit is indigenous to the Americas. Today, because of how particular national foods are branded, we think of the tomato as being inextricably Italian. Truth is, before Columbuss voyages (he was Italian, not Spaniard), the tomato was absent in foods prepared in the many Italian city-states and principalities. When he initially brought the fruit back to Italy, in the north, people were growing them as simply garden features; not for consumption.
