Currently ranked as World No. 8 in the ATP Rankings, Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina announced yesterday that he will undergo surgery on Monday to treat a recurring left wrist injury. The 2009 US Open champion posted a message on Facebook about his plan. I want to tell you that after a period of medical treatment, in which we tried to be competitive on a tennis court, and following new examinations done today, my doctor Richard Berger, decided that I should have surgery to fix the problem on my left wrist. It will be tomorrow, Monday, 24 March, wrote del Potro. Obviously, its not the easiest choice or the happiest moment of my career. I experienced a similar situation and I know how hard it is to be out of the tour, the desire to return, the endless weeks of recovery and how difficult it is to start fighting for the top spots in the rankings again. This wrist injury has created a lot of problems in the career of del Potro. After winning the US Open in 2009, del Potro maintained some decent consistency on tour but then this wrist injury came into the picture and consequently sidelined him for 8 months in 2010. The he underwent surgery to treat his wrist. Since his return to action, del Potro has won 11 titles, including two titles this season. The same wrist injury resurfaced during the Aussie Open this season, where del Potro lost to Roberto Bautista Agut in the second round. The same injury forced him to retire from his opening match in Dubai Champions. Del Potro then withdrew from Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami. As always, thank you to those who express their support in any part of Argentina and the world, during tournaments, on the streets or social networks, del Potro said in closing his online message. The strength you send me and my desire will be crucial during my recovery.
