Customer Service Corner, October 28, 2013 Change The Culture (And the Results Will Follow): Duke University is known for being an excellent academic university. In the sports realm, Duke University is most well-known for its men’s basketball team, which has won four national championships since the early 1990’s. In college football, opponents over the years have been excited to see Duke on their schedule because from 2000 - 2011, Duke’s football team has won at total of 25 games, while losing 115 (a paltry winning percentage of .178). Three of those years since 2000, the team went winless. However, in 2012, Duke won six games. Now so far in 2013, Duke’s record is 6-2. The team hasn’t had back-to-back years of winning six or more games since 1989. What happened? Duke football coach David Cutcliffe has been saying, “Change the culture and the results will follow.” When a team is used to losing and falling short of their goals, the leader’s influence is invaluable. Belief alone is not enough, yet it must exist for an organization to be successful. When a team knows their leader believes in them, it’s contagious. Coach Cutcliffe said, “I’m a believer in expectations. I think it’s critical that you create expectations” (Carp, Daniel. “Duke football receives votes in AP and Coaches polls.” Duke Chronicle., 27 October 2013. Web. 28 Oct. 2013). With the confidence from your leader and in each other, some of the close games start to go your way and that success breeds future success. Teams typically respond well to a positive leader who sees the best in them and who will accept nothing less than their utmost effort towards the goals before them. If you’re part of a team that is struggling, it’s likely time for a culture change. Let it start with you. Lead from where you are and be part of the culture change necessary to turn falling short into winning. “Culture does not change because we desire to change it. Culture changes when the organization is transformed; the culture reflects the realities of people working together every day.” –Frances Hesselbein Make it a Magnificent Monday!!! SY Steve Yeatts
