Cycles... So, we subsidize the corn farmers in the mid-west to grow as much corn (genetically modified, tasteless, etc.) as possible. The super-low cost of the (subsidized) corn, allows an entire low-cost food industry to grow overly-fatty beef, over-sugared foods, and secondary foods based on corn oil and other by-products. These can then be sold - cheaply - to the general population, who, especially because of low incomes, are inclined to buy them. The general population is then exposed to obesity, diabetes, and a general reduction in health. The general reduction in health is, of course passed on as an additional burden on reduced income and as the additional cost of health care...The people are screwed... We allow large companies, the standard for which is Walmart, to expand into markets globally and to hire at incredibly low wages. Because of their expansive nature and low wages, they can drive small business competition from the areas they target. Because of their (and their business kins) depressive effect on the economy, people are driven to shop at them rather than at smaller businesses, which must charge more. They create a cycle of low wages, low competition, and (required) high traffic ...And the people are screwed...
