D-17. Seventeen days before the Oscars for tonton Rithy. The Missing Picture. To mark my 17th birthday, I will have a Cambodian lunch with Clara, my close and harpist friend, in a restaurant near my school in Boston. I would have liked to have this menu: samlor korko thnot (green palm fruit) with chhlang fish (vegetables ratatouille with Mystus Nemurus fish), samlor mchou khroeung pong aongkraong sleuk thnoeung (sour soup with red weaver ants’ eggs), fried fish with nhoam svay (green mango in teuk trey). A perfect lunch in Oudong. Dad often drove me to the countryside to learn from the people who knew best how to cook our Khmer national dishes. I will order the Samlor Korko, the everyday one-pot stirring soup, that children to old people eat with steamed rice. One of my favorite dish, do you know how to prepare it?
