D Z S R SPORTS RADIO News : HUELGAS, DAGMIL, MARTINEZ, GABUCO GET ELECTED TO POC ATHLETES COMMISSION CONCERNS OF NATIONAL ATHLETES SHALL BE ACCORDED MORE ATTENTION WITH THE ELECTION OF A FIVE-MAN P-O-C ATHLETES COMMISSION LED BY TRIATHLETE NIKKO HUELGAS. Veteran international triathlete NIKKO HUELGAS , Olympian long jumper Henry Dagmil, former Asian Boxing Championship gold medalist turned coach MITCHELL MARTINEZ and World Women Boxing Championship champion JOSIE GABUCO were elected by some forty national athletes Saturday at POC office in Pasig. The four athletes plus one more shall comprise the new POC Athletes Commission which serves as “voice” of some 800 plus national roster during Board Meeting and General Assembly. Most national athletes from Olympic and non-olympic sport were first gathered by IOC Rep to the Philippines Mikee Cojuangco Jaworski last November to explain the importance of the Commission and duties of the officials….before the election was held Saturday. POC President Peping Cojuangco and Sec General Steve HOntiveros personally witnessed the proceedings…whch saw Huelgas, a De La Salle Marketing Management graduate earning 38 votes --the most among the 40 athlete-voters. Huelgas shall immediately start working for the Commission as he leaves on January 21 for a 3-day OCA Athletes Forum in Kuwait. Huelgas said every member of the Commission shall take turns in leading the group aside from specific tasks like gathering the athletes and knowing their concerns, promoting their activities and accomplishments thru social media , putting more attention to women in sports among others.
