D810 l 1/320 sec l F/3.2 l ISO 640 l 85 mm Nikor l Q: The central question is NOT : 1) Do photographs lie? ( nor even...) 2) Are they Real? BUT 3) When does the pursuit of aesthetics violate our ethics? Does this image Floating Feather violate my ethics since its been sharpened, color enhanced, cropped with PS, and adjusted with NIK ? Maybe NOT. But when the Afghan Girl, an image by Steve McCurry that was on National Geographics Cover in 1986, is retouched in 2014 to the point where the subject looks like a model (with the intention of selling a PS retouching class), then, YES, that does violate my ethics. Each of us decides, morally and ethically with each individual photograph, with a subjective value judgment. As with all ethical judgments, a photographers position is unique for each individual.
