DANIEL- FRANCOIS ESPRIT AUBER (1782-1871) studied with Luigi Cherubini and composed 40 operas including La Muette de Portici – also known as Masaniello - ( 1828 ) and Fra Diavolo ( 1830 ) which have, to this day, remained in the repertory. La Muette de Portici marked the advent of grand opera in Paris; it has also been credited with generating such enthusiasm for civil and constitutional rights that when, in 1830, it was performed at the Brussels opera house it ignited a riot that gave birth to the Belgian revolution. Other major operas include: Le domino noir (1837), Les diamants de la Couronne(1841 ), Haydee (1847), and Manon Lescaut (1856). The libretto of his Le Philtre was translated and adapted for Donizetti’s exceedingly famous L’Elisir d’Amore. Similarly, the libretto for Auber’s Gustave III was adapted for Mercadante’s Il Reggente; and later on, for Verdi’s famous Un Ballo in Maschera. In 2012 France and Sweden - in a joint issue - commemorated Auber and his opera Gustav III. In 1842, Auber became the successor of Cherubini as the head of the Conservatoire of Paris. This is not the first time France honours Auber with a postage stamp; in fact, a commemorative stamp for Auber was issued in 1971.
