DARE YOU NOT TO SING IT!!!! ODE TO NATIONAL LURE COURSING (with apologies to Francis Scott Key) Oh, say can you see by the dawns early light All the whippets in line at the measuring station? They shuffle along to get felt up and wiped, These tedious tasks make them show their frustration. Then they hear the damned lure, theyll be running for sure! The howling begins, only its premature! Then they walk past the lure field where soon they’ll be coursing wildly To say they are all crazed, is putting it mildly. The time then draws near for whippets to run They ready themselves to compete on a great course, Dogs appear at the line in yellow, blue, and pink They hear ‘tally-ho’ and they push off with great force. Then they dig and they turn, while their muscles do burn, They fly down the straights, for a placement to earn. And the lure stops, the dogs pant, the judges tally their scores This is only the first run, there will be so much more. Second run comes around, all the names are redrawn The blankets are changed, and the lure does a reverse Whippets run other way, some will cut, some will stay On top of the lure, while the green hills they traverse. Oh, the judges will eye these fleet dogs, they will try To score them fairly, without causing a tie. But that’s pie-in-the-sky, wishful thinking at best, Let the run-offs begin, for that Best of Breed quest. At the end of the day, final numbers they post, The humans all wait, with great anticipation. When they see the results, some are happy, some sad But for all involved, a day of exhilaration! Then the ribbons disbursed, NBQ up to first, Then comes BOB, and some judges are cursed. And the whippets all find the day quite to their satisfaction For these bunnies they chase, are a big attraction.
