DAY 1: Fraternities and Sororities in Toronto. RUSH – The recruitment period at the beginning of the semester, when you are asked to join the organization Most universities and colleges have fraternities and sororities on campus. Typically fraternities and sororities are known to be an American “thing”. However, there have been fraternities and sororities in Toronto for over a 100 years. Collectively, these groups are called the “Greek system” because each house is named after two or three letters of the Greek alphabet. A lot of what you’ve heard about fraternities and sororities is true. There are plenty of “Animal House” antics going on. However, frats and sororities aren’t just about all-night keggers and random hook-ups. Greek organizations do a lot of community service: they raise money for charities, volunteer in organizations and better the community through fundraisers. These events are great resume builders, and employers see participation in Greek organizations as a plus. Among other things, it means that you have some measure of discipline and that you managed to maintain decent grades in college despite your extracurricular commitments. Reasons to Go Greek: - Instant community – crucial to meet new people in your university career - Leadership opportunities which will serve you well through university and later in life - Community service that will add credits to your resume - The structure of a family which always helps you go through tough times - Parties, parties, parties! - Intramural sports - Nice and spacious houses that you can use as your second home - Network opportunities after graduation Of course, you don’t have to join a fraternity or a sorority. I’m certain that you’ll be able to find friends outside of the Greek Life. However, over the period of the next week or so, it will be my goal to show you a fuller picture of what Greek Life really is. Every fraternity and sorority has its own values and ideals. I am not familiar with all of them so I will be speaking on behalf of my own fraternity. Hopefully I will be able to display the love and passion I have for it. I have attached a video that gives you a peek of what greek life is about. Proud to be a Sigma Chi (ΣΧ) https://youtube/watch?v=tsKHvRZ4Fyw
