DAY 124 : Then and Now. Work was pretty fine today. I had the task to translate some Nepali texts, basically success stories of different individuals into English. I remember back in 2003 when I was in Nepal briefly and I could barely read or write in Nepali. I was only eleven years old and had lived in Brunei and the UK all my life. It was never my priority to learn reading and writing in Nepali but that trip to Nepal changed things. I wasn’t comfortable with not knowing how to read in Nepali or how to write. Having cousins who made light remarks along the way was another annoying thing back then. I dabbled with Nepali education by going to a school here for just more than a month and I couldn’t do it. I probably skipped a few school days and next thing you know, my parents figured and the family went through a very tense few days during that period. I wasn’t happy and at that time I just wanted out. I didn’t want to be in Nepal. Thankfully, my father understood my unhappiness and pulled me out of the school and pretty soon afterwards – we went back to the UK. I was happy. Fast forward to now and here I am, translating hard-core Nepali text into English. I made myself watch a lot of Nepali films, read newspapers and also few books in Nepali and right now I feel just about okay with my reading ability. Writing chahi still a long way to go but Hey, it can only get better. To not know scares me. It is even scary to realize that in life you will never know everything.
