DAY TWELVE – TUESDAY JUNE 4TH – PART II SORRENTO Toma A Surriento (Come Back to Sorrento) Sorrento (Roman name Surrentum) is a small town in Campania on the Sorrentine peninsula overlooking the Bay of Naples. It is a popular tourist destination easily accessed from Naples and Pompeii. There are many great viewpoints such as Naples itself, Vesuvius and the Isle of Capri. A very beautiful and scenic Amalfi drive connects Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast on the southern side of the peninsula - scenic, but also a little scary, as the narrow road weaves along and threads through the cliffs high above the Tyrrhenian Sea. The sea cliffs and luxury hotels have attracted many famous people through the years, including rock stars, movie stars, assorted “glitterati” and the historic opera stars Enrico Caruso and Luciano Pavarotti. Sorrento is famous for the creation of “Intarsia Sorrentina,” a highly intricate artistic skill which uses inlaid wood of different colors to create beautiful art and incredible furniture. It must be seen to be appreciated. Agricultural products include citrus, olives, nuts, wine, and Limoncello, a digestif made from lemon rinds. Ferries and jet hydrofoils provide sea service to Naples, Amalfi, Positano and the Isle of Capri. We dashed hither and yon, weaving through narrow crowded streets, following our little guide "Geppetto" who held up (at times) the little yellow sign we were supposed to follow. However, he got so busy talking and forgot to hold it up so many times that we had some close calls in the critical “transportation connection matrix.” We had a fabulous lunch in a little cellar trattoria and imbibed enough vino to give us courage to descend the harrowing “steps of hades” from the nose bleed section of the city to sea level and the jet boats to Capri.
