DEATH OF FORMER HIGHFIELD RFC PRESIDENT & PRO TONY LOUGHRY All involved with Highfield Rugby Football Club were saddened recently to hear of the death of their esteemed former President, Trustee, PRO and honourary life member Tony Loughry. Tony’s involvement with Highfield began in 1962-1963 season when as a prolific kicker he scored 108 points becoming the first Highfield player to top 100 points playing in the Minor and Junior teams. He continued to set records as the years progressed and his highest total was achieved during the 1965-66 season when he became the first player in Ireland to top the 200 mark, eventually ending up with 236 points, thus making a huge contribution to the campaign. However, it was in the 1966-67 season that Tony really earned his stripes when in the Munster Senior Cup final against Cork Constitution he scored what was described in the Sunday papers as “The greatest kick ever seen in Irish rugby”. In 1966 Tony captained Highfield to the Munster Junior Cup win, and he was also on the Highfield teams that won Munster Senior Cup medals in 1966 & 1968, playing a hugely influential role as the goal kicker for the team. Tony’s lifelong association with Highfield continued after his playing career ended. He became club President during the 1989-90 season, the year when Highfield won the very last full Munster Senior League. Subsequently, Tony has served in the position of club chairman; honourary secretary and trustee, whilst also being actively involved with the club development committee. In 2006 Tony was awarded honorary life membership of Highfield in recognition of his outstanding service to rugby in general, and to Highfield in particular. Tony was an extremely popular member of Highfield who inspired generations of club members with his dedication, good humour and kindness. To his wife Marie, daughter Rebecca and son Anthony we extend our deepest heartfelt sympathy. Ar dheis Dé go raibh an anam.
