DEMYTHOLOGIZING CHRISTMAS? Imagine a world bereft of poems, and songs, and the kids denied the great stories of the past. A world ordered by efficient management, socially engineered to think only scientifically, eschewing what cannot be measured by its computer programs. The problem of the post-moderns is they think myth is opposed to truth, when it is a dressed up kind of truth. When dear old Plato of the Greek philosophers said knowledge is a recollection, was he indulging in fantasy or was there a grain of truth in his seemingly obscurantist view. For him the soul merely remembers matters it had known in a previous existence. And heres another flash point because soul no longer resonates to the contemporary minds. Soul for the ancients not only refers to mental capacities, but such operations as nutrition or growth. Maybe a time comes when mechanistic mentality may no longer accept the notion of soul, or may reduce it to pure mental construct hence a myth. Hence that sign: Christmas, we know its a myth. Now thats even more pernicious than a commercialized Christmas. How true is political philosopher James Schaals idea that the atheist of today is not an intellectual protestor like Nietzche but merely a passionate rebel, whose only reason for protesting is his will--not reason.
