DEVOTION BY UNKNOWN Read: Proverbs 6:23 & James 1:22-25 & Hebrews 4:12 ” … and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life” Proverbs 6:23b I’m an adventurer at heart, and there’s nothing more thrilling for me than driving to someplace I’ve never visited and trying my best to get to the hotel or the concert hall or the restaurant with as little external help as possible. A GPS? Who needs that! But, there does come a point on practically every trip when I am forced to confess, usually in tears of frustration, that I am, gulp, lost. LOST! Likewise, when we’re walking the path of life with God, we can’t get to where we’re going until we are always at a point that we know we need his help. Confession, first and foremost, is humbly recognizing the simple truth that we’re missing the mark of living in Christ and the power of his Spirit, and that we need Jesus’ to change us. The scripture describes itself as a “mirror” (James 1:22-25) and as the sword of the Spirit (Hebrews 4:12), a kind of “mighty scalpel” that can cut our hearts open with a surgical precision. Repentence is then what we do in response to this new understanding of what’s amiss. We agree to remove what’s bad and what doesn’t belong, and we agree to follow God’s directions toward healing and growth. Confession and repentance aren’t the crossroads or the crisis points in the life of a Christ follower. They are part of every step on the “narrow path” in following Christ. Don’t drag your feet. Walk daily in confession and repentance.
