DID YOU KNOW? WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY!!!! For the first time in six years, the Grace Carroll Rocky Mountain Labor School will be hosted by the Montana State AFL-CIO at Montana Tech in Butte, Montana Student check-in is on July 21st and the school runs from July 22nd-26th. Registration continues right up until the Friday before the classes begin. The school brings together union members from all walks of life, all types of unions, and from an eight-state region of the western U.S. The courses are intense, the Instructors are world-class, and the camaraderie is second to none! This school is more than just an educational opportunity, it is an overall experience that shifts workers, who are already dedicated professionals in their field, into true trade union activists. Butte, the school’s host city, is a mining town in southwestern Montana, known as the Gibraltar of Unionism. It is home to the United Mine Workers Local #1 and the Women’s Protective Association, which was the only union of its kind representing women regardless of their type of employment. In the early 1900s, Butte was as much a 24-hour city as Las Vegas is today and the city’s union heritage runs deep. It’s a place where a union organizer was drug to his death through the streets by company agents, and a place where more than 10,000 men and women flooded the street to walk in the funeral procession, despite the company death threats. Welcome to Montana! The classes include Labor Law I and II, Collective Bargaining I and II, Arbitration I and II, Labor Arbitration Seminar, Legal Rights of Public Employees, Labor Leadership, Staying Out of Trouble with the DOL (running union officer elections), and the Power of Information. In addition to winning new union contracts, winning grievances, and building strong community ties, you will learn how to give your union a public presence and a positive image through news media and social media training. All unions should consider sending students. Sponsorships and partial sponsorships are available to help with costs, for those in need. Call the state federation for more information. If you live in Montana call the MT AFL-CIO at 406-442-1708. Are you a worker interested in attending? All students are credentialed through a labor organization. This includes your individual union, your area Central Labor Council, and your state federation. If you or your union have questions, visit the registration page online (gcrmls.org/#!the-call-2013) or call the MT AFL-CIO at 406-442-1708 for more information. There is a limited amount of space and classes are filling up, so act fast!!!
