DOHA: Reach Out To Asia (Rota) and Care International recently inaugurated a new school for children of Swat District in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. Working with Care International, Rota supports revitalising education and building peace in post-conflict and flood-affected Swat Valley of the province and provides quality education for children and youth in 42 schools in the valley, including increasing children’s leadership skills and social cohesion through extracurricular sport activities. Work on the school, featuring nine classrooms, a hall and a science laboratory, began in 2011 and was completed this August. A total of 596 students will pursue education in the new school, which employs seven teachers. Naseer Iqbal, Rota International Programmes Specialist, Waleed Rauf, Country Director of Care International Pakistan, Mukhtar Pasha, Project Manager of Care International, PTC members and community members attended the inauguration of the school. “Rota is proud to provide new educational facilities for children of the province. Children’s right to education must be a priority, especially in communities where education is key to their future,” said Rota Executive Director Essa Al Mannai. “We now have a beautiful building — a school where children will want to work hard and study, a school supported by teachers with abilities. The Government Higher Secondary School Kishawara has all qualities necessary to make it a successful school.” Rota is committed to reconstructing two secondary schools, rehabilitating 40 primary, middle and secondary schools, implementing a training programme for 200 teachers and launching youth development initiatives through sports. “Rota understands that students need a protective learning environment with psychosocial support to enable them to focus on their studies for long-term benefits for themselves and the community. This new school is a testament to Rota’s strategy to provide access to educational facilities and improve the quality of education for its beneficiaries,” added Al Mannai. Under the project, the Rota Inspire football team once again won the final match at the second district-level sports festival. ‘Inspire’ is a project for children and youth in 42 schools in Swat, implemented in partnership with Care International. A key element of the three-year project focuses on increasing social cohesion through youth development using sport activities. “We are delighted at the success of our football team. We have always advocated that sports have the potential for producing positive outcomes in educational and non-educational settings for children and youth. “Sports also serve as a mechanism for dissemination of values, knowledge, and norms to strengthen social harmony,” said Al Mannai.
