DON STANFORD and ALAN KOBLITZ, two veterans who have collectively won over 150 EMBL games over the past ten years, locked in a classic pitchers’ duel last night, with Stanford coming out the winner , with a 4-1 complete game Cubs decision over the Yankees. It was one of Stanford’s best performances, allowing 4 hits and no walks. Koblitz was also sharp despite taking the loss. The Cubs are now 3-4-1 and the Yankees are 4-2. Thanks to Willie Rogers, umpire, and 15 or so players from both teams for spending an hour working on the field before the game, making an almost unplayable field playable. Stanford was aided by the best defensive game the Cubs have played all year. Outfielders Joe Hahn and Michael Lemaster made spectacular catcher in LF and RF and infielders JT Parrott, Steve Coxen, Craig Francis, and Dan Newsom made outstanding plays. Cubs catcher Jessy Davis threw out one Yankee runner and both Koblitz and Stanford picked off runners at first. Joel Gomez, playing 3rd for the Yankees, made a fine stop and threw a strike at first from his knees to rob a Cub from a hit. Hitting for the Cubs: JESSY DAVIS continues his torrid hitting, still batting over .500 in the season’s 10th week; he went 2-4 (double). Joe Hahn went 2-4 with a BB; Dan Newsom went 2-4 (double) and brother Andy Newsom doubled and walked. Also hitting were Stanford, Francis, and Parrott. Hitting for the Yankees: Joel Munoz, Justin Duncan, Adam (Chop)Hester, and Alan Hicks all singled for the Yankees. Art Smith hit a long shot to the RF fence that was snagged on the run by Michael Lemaster. As Yankee manager Shawn Starks commented: “We always play good, close games with the Cubs”.
