DONT CALL THE C-X17 AN SUV - JAGUAR Jaguar’s upcoming SUV, previewed last year with the fast-looking C-X17 concept, should not be defined as an SUV. That’s according to an interview with Jaguar Land Rover boss Ralf Speth, who told the UK’s Autocar that “a Jaguar SUV is not possible”. That doesn’t mean the brand has cancelled its SUV project, of course, but that SUVs “and 4x4s” are the domain of Land Rover. “The Jaguar concept is far more road-orientated. It will need a different kind of name,” Speth told Autocar. Leaving aside the ‘Sport’ component of the ‘SUV’ initialism, it seems JLR would like to steer buyers away from seeing the production C-X17 as a ‘Utility Vehicle’. Perhaps it will take a leaf then from BMW’s book, which defines its high-riding models not as SUVs, but as SAVs - Sports Activity Vehicles. For now, Jaguar is understood to be referring to its tallest offering as a “sports crossover”. Like the growing number of sports-styled SUVs with aggressive faces and tapered rooflines, from the affordable Mazda CX-5 to Porsche’s premium new Macan, Jaguar’s SUV SAV sports crossover will combine sleek looks with a higher driving position. And while it can be said that a large rear storage space makes any wagon something of a ‘utility vehicle’, most brands would prefer to focus their marketing spend on selling desireability. “Of course, it will not be anything like a sports car,” Speth said, “but it will have a very specific character that sets it apart.” The C-X17, which is expected to debut as either the ‘XQ’ or the ‘Q-Type’, should make its production debut in the coming year.
