DONT MISS YOUR POLKADOT PRINCESS Ok let me tell you a story that will make you smile and say a...so go ahead sit down...kuch belew kuch belew...and hold your hands over the computer screen as I warm up your fingers and heart. You see I went to Binyam binnie Hambissa hand Sable Argaw pre-wedding party last night. I was blown away, there is nothing more beautiful in this world than when two people find love because this world is full of false-hope and counterfeit love. But what I saw between Sable and Bini was pure love and they in return filled the whole room with enough desta to make Ethiopia herself do eskista. Now Im not going to lie, most of you know I have a thing for Ethiopian weddings. I love Ethiopian weddings, I mean as is even before I went to the pre-wedding party last night, I have a tendency to listen to Ethiopian wedding songs all the time. And my boys viciously make fun of me for it, but who cares, I just pop my collars and keep doing eskitsa regardless. But what you dont know is the reason why I love Ethiopian weddings. You see, when I was 11 years old, my parents took me to an Ethiopian wedding in New York. I have never in my life seen a wedding like this. I mean there had to be at least 800 people at the wedding crammed in the Sheraton ball room on the second floor. At one point, I went downstairs and walked into the ballroom downstairs from the wedding and I swear to you that the chandelier on the ceiling literally started falling apart like icicles in spring time. People upstairs were dancing and jumping so hard that they literally broke the chandelier downstairs in the ballroom. Then the moment that probably changed my life happened. Wubeshet, the most amazing singer Ive ever heard (may God rest his soul) was the singer and he started singing Musheraye. The bride got up and started kissing the feet of the grooms family and he started crying. I mean what the hell, do we not have the most romantic culture in the world! Then the bride and groom started as Wubeshet started singing Musheraye. Then everyone joined them on the dance floor and there had to be at least 400 people dancing on the dance floor at the same time. And there I was on the edge looking at them wishing I knew how to dance. Then all the sudden, the world paused, I mean literally the globe stopped spinning and I was magically transfixed and given hope from a distance. At that exact moment, I realized why my last name was Fikre cause I met my love for the first time. I swear the music stopped, people parted as though they were the red sea, and there all the way across the room stood this beautiful girl (maybe 10 years old) and I was a lost little 11 year old boy. I did not know what to say or do. I just stood there frozen like beredo wishing I could go up to her and say Hi Im Teddy. Instead I just stood there watching her in a haze, and she smiled at me that etched into my mind like a thousand scriptos. She had on a black and white polkadot dress and I swear she was more beautiful than anything I have ever seen. Alas, I waited too long, for he that hesitates will always regret. Soon enough she went back her parents and I just stood there sad as shit that I lost the love of my life. To this day, when I hear Ethiopian wedding songs or when I go to Ethiopian weddings, it is my polkadot princess that I think . I dont know, ladies one of you might be that girl in the polkadot dress. Or maybe the polkadot represents all our regrets, the moments when we did not act whether it was out of fear, pride, or past baggage. Regardless my polkadot princess is out there and this time I will not hesitate again, I am no longer the scared little 11 year old boy after all. So here is to love and all her infinite possibilities, here is to Bini and Sable, here is to fiker all the world around. May you too find your polkadot, and when you do, dont fear, embrace him or her and take a risk because you dont want to wake up 20 years from now looking for your polkadot.
