DOUBLE REWARD FOR PEOPLE OF SCRIPTURE. In the name of God the most beneficent, the most merciful. [5:83] Saheeh International. And when they hear what has been revealed to the Messenger, you see their eyes overflowing with tears because of what they have recognized of the truth. They say, Our Lord, we have believed, so register us among the witnesses. And why should we not believe in Allah and what has come to us of the truth? And we aspire that our Lord will admit us [to Paradise] with the righteous people. So Allah rewarded them for what they said with gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. And that is the reward of doers of good. But those who disbelieved and denied Our signs - they are the companions of Hellfire. Commentary:- Habsha was a Christian state in the time of Prophet Mohammad (saw), whose head was Asbaha Najashi. In his rule, Muslims migrated to his state two times due to atrocities and aggression committed on Muslims by pagans of Mecca. These verses came for the Christians of Habsha. Prophet Mohammad (saw) sent Umroo bin Umea Zamri (rta) with a letter addressed to Najashi, which he read over to him; on this he assembled all the migrant Muslims along with Jaffar bin Abi Talib (rta) and his people of book, pious men and public. He then ordered Jaffar bin Abi Talib (rta) to recite holy Quran who recited surah Mariam (Mary), in which it is mentioned how Messiah was born and that he was a man and messenger of God. On hearing those verses they were overwhelmed and tears came down from their eyes and they became believers. This type of effect and believing on Prophet Mohammad (saw) as the messenger of Allah is also described in verse 199-3 of the holy Quran, ” [3:199] Saheeh International And indeed, among the People of the Scripture are those who believe in Allah and what was revealed to you and what was revealed to them, [being] humbly submissive to Allah. They do not exchange the verses of Allah for a small price. Those will have their reward with their Lord. Indeed, Allah is swift in account”. Commentary Continued:- It is written in Hadith {sayings of Prophet Mohammad (saw)} that when news of death of Najashi ruler of Habsha reached Prophet Mohammad (saw), he told his companions that your brother has died in Habsha, lets pray his Namaz-e-Janaza (prayer for dead body in absentia), which was offered in a desert. (Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim). Prophet Mohammad (saw) said in another Hadith that whosoever from book of scriptures believes that Prophet Mohammad (saw) is the messenger of Allah, he will have double reward. ( sahih Bukhari, Book of knowledge and Nikah). May God give us guidance to select the true path. AMEEN. SOURCES. 1. The Quran Kareem.
