DRACUT- Germain “Sam” L. Bellemare, 95, died peacefully Thursday, December 4, 2014 at Palm Center Nursing Home in Chelmsford, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Doris (Bourassa) Bellemare with whom he shared 62 years of marriage with until her passing in 2001. Sam was born in Lowell on April 30, 1919. He was the son of the late Joseph and Ida (Germain) Bellemare. He was predeceased by his 12 brothers and sisters. Sam proudly served his country in the United States Army during W.W.II until being honorably discharged in 1945. He participated in the siege at Normandy Beach and was a true American hero to his family. Prior to his retirement, Sam was employed as a correctional officer at the Massachusetts Correctional Institute for 23 years and prior to that was employed as a mill worker. Sam was the face of the first Mass Gun Campaign and was seen on billboards and ads across the state. He was an exceptional athlete in his day and played semi pro baseball for the Canadian Athletic Club and the U.S. Army League at Cape Cod. He was a star pitcher and first baseman, dubbed Flash Bellemare by his teammates and fans. Despite such recognition Sam was always a quiet, proud and humble man. He was also a licensed Ham Radio Operator and handcrafted spectacular model airplanes. His garden was a huge source of pleasure and pride and his tomatoes were the best in town. In his free time he enjoyed fishing and watching his Red Sox win three World Series. He is survived by his children, David Bellemare and his wife Dotti of Tyngsboro with whom he made his home , Connie Farley and Denise Platanites of Dracut; his grandchildren, Mike and Kevin Farley, Cheryl Dodds, Tracy Encarnacao, Todd Bellemare, Sara and Nicole Platanites; as well as his great-grandchildren, Hannah Farley, Sidney and Patrick Dodds, Trevor and Olivia Encarnacao and Jordan and Lia Bellemare. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at DRACUT FUNERAL HOME 2159 Lakeview Avenue, Dracut, on MONDAY, December 8th from 4 until 8 PM. His Funeral Mass will be held from the Funeral Home on TUESDAY, December 9th at 8 AM followed by his Funeral Mass at 9 AM in St. Francis Church, Dracut. Interment will follow and full military honors will be presented at St. Joseph Cemetery, Chelmsford. Donations may be made in Sam’s name to the American Diabetes Association P.O.
