DRIVER CHARGED WITH VEHICULAR HOMICIDE AFTER UNBELTED PASSENGER DIES IN HEPHZIBAH WRECK A Jenkins County man faces vehicular homicide charges after his passenger died Saturday afternoon after a wreck in Hephzibah. At 1:07 pm Saturday, Richmond County Sheriffs Deputies responded to the 4400 Block of Peach Orchard Road regarding a traffic accident. Upon deputies arrival it was learned that a Chevrolet Pickup truck had been traveling southbound in the left lane of traffic. The driver of the truck (Identified as 19-year old-Matthew Chance of Jenkins County) attempted to change lanes when Chance lost control of his vehicle and overturned. The passenger of the truck, 21-year-old Akash Patel of Waynesboro, was unrestrained and was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. Chance was taken into custody and will be transported to the Richmond County Jail and charged with the following: vehicular homicide in the second degree and driving too fast for conditions.
