DW STORY #71 – INVASION OF THE DINOSAURS [THIRD DOCTOR]: The second story of the eleventh season was a six-episode adventure broadcast over six Saturdays from January 12th to February 16th, 1974. PLOT: Returning to London from their previous adventure (“The Time Warrior”), the Doctor and Sarah Jane are surprised to find the city deserted. Apparently, dinosaurs have been appearing around the city and almost everyone has fled. The Doctor quickly realizes that someone is messing with time, but even he is shocked to find out that U.N.I.T.’s own Captain Mike Yates is working with the baddies! Their goal is to return the entire planet to a more pristine time before humans and their technology (and pollution) ruined everything. Nevertheless, following several plot twists, the Doctor is able to set things right. Captain Mike Yates is allowed to quietly resign from U.N.I.T. Everything about this story is great – except the dinosaurs! That’s unfortunate. The plot is good … the writing is good … the surprises are excellent … but the dinosaurs are atrocious – so bad that they definitely distract a viewer when on the screen. Regardless, it is the only time the classic series included real dinosaurs, so it’s probably still worth watching. Just be prepared for bad special effects! One additional note – the Doctor’s futuristic “Whomobile” makes its first appearance in this story!
