DW STORY #85 – THE SEEDS OF DOOM [FOURTH DOCTOR]: The sixth and final story of the thirteenth season was a six-part adventure broadcast over six Saturdays from January 31st to March 6th, 1976. PLOT: A vegetable pod is found in Antarctica – but it is no ordinary pod. Rather, it is a Krynoid pod – a predatory, carnivorous “space weed” that can devour entire planets. Once it opens and begins infecting people, the Doctor and Sarah Jane have their hands full trying to contain its spread. However, things are complicated further when a maniacal plant lover – millionaire Harrison Chase – arranges for the pod to be stolen so that he can add it to his personal collection. Following several deaths and an airstrike by the RAF, the problem is eventually contained. This is one of my favorite classic Doctor Who stories and one of the few that didn’t lose its magic as I grew up. It moves at a steady pace, has believable tension and suspense, and tells a creative story that defies predictability. Moreover, the special effects aren’t even that bad. I would highly recommend it to anyone – especially Whovians! This was the last regular story to feature U.N.I.T. for quite some time; however, none of the U.N.I.T. regulars were available to appear. Regardless, it still drew the ire of Mary Whitehouse, who wrote, “Strangulation – by hand, by claw, by obscene vegetable matter – is the latest gimmick ... it contains some of the sickest, most horrible material.” Ms. Whitehouse always makes me smile. :-) COMPANIONS IN THIS STORY: Sarah Jane Smith Up next: “The Masque of Mandragora” … ~ CL
